I’m excited to announce that we went live with a new frontpage algo yesterday. I can’t reveal all the details of how it works, but I’m happy to announce its intended effects:
- More consistent frontpage output: I wasn’t pleased that some days we had 3-4 stories go popular, and other days 25+ stories went popular. I think we should have 10-18 popular stories per day (a bit less on weekends). This change should encourage more comments, and it should also make our RSS feed less overwhelming.
- Higher quality stories: we’re at an all-time high in terms of story submissions, and the new algo will make sure only the cream of the crop will get on the homepage.
- Harder to game: the new algo is a bit less predictable than the old one, so any spammers should expect to work harder to have any success gaming Tip’d.
Anyway, now that we’re out of public beta, incremental improvements like these are what you can expect from our development team, week in and week out, while we slowly lay the groundwork for Tip’d 2.0.
